KENTUCKY STATE POLICE WILL BE DOING TRAFFIC SAFETY CHECKPOINTS THIS FEBRUARY
Fox news reported the following today:
LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — February may be the month of love, but there’s nothing romantic about getting a ticket.
KSP will be conducting safety traffic checkpoints in various areas across the state to start the month of December. Post 12 monitors Shelby, Spencer, Franklin, Anderson, Scott, Woodford, and Fayette counties.

State police said these checkpoints will be used to enhance the enforcement of traffic safety laws across the Commonwealth and that special attention will be paid to enforcing seatbelt, sobriety, insurance, and registration laws.
Drivers who encounter a traffic safety checkpoint will be asked to present their license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance. KSP said drivers who have this information readily available and who have not violated any laws should expect a short delay of 30 seconds to one minute.

Checkpoints will be held at the following Fayette County locations:

-
U.S. 25 Exit 99 I-75 North
-
U.S. 25 Exit 99 I-75 South

Emergency Planning
The most important thing you can do to prepare yourself is to write up a family plan today, so that it is ready if you and your family are separated. Click English or Spanish * to get a plan you can download. You can also pick one up at our CRCKY office. If you are not able to write, call CRCKY so we can help you write one.
* French coming soon
Cards to carry in your wallet
All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have certain rights and protections under the U.S. Constitution. The ILRC’s Red Cards help people assert their rights and defend themselves in many situations, such as when ICE agents go to a home. Printouts of these cards are also available at the CRCKY office. Click for Haitian Creole, French, or Spanish.
What Should I Do?
ALL HOUSEHOLDS

-
Complete a "Family Plan" (see above) so that your family and friends know what to do if you are not there.
-
If you have not already consulted with an immigration lawyer, this would be a good time to look for one. Initial consultations inusually cost between $50 and $170 and can give you valuable information about your case. For a list of immigration lawyers/clinics, click here. Please know that these lawyers have a lot of people asking for their help right now. Leave a message and don't be surprised if it takes a while for them to get back to you.
-
Educate yourself. Only a search warrant written by a court and signed by a Judge gives ICE the right to enter your house and search your property. The warrant must have the correct name of the person or property, the right address, and the search must be done during the time written on the warrant. Finally, it must be signed by a judge. Be aware that an arrest warrant does NOT give ICE the right to enter or search your property. You can refuse to let in an officer who only has an arrest warrant.
-
If you entered the country more than two years ago, carry paperwork on you that proves it. Proof could be an old cell phone bill, lease agreement, electric bill, school records, etc. Take pictures of these documents and have them on your phone. If ICE picks you up and does not believe you have been in the US for at least two years, they can remove you without a hearing. They cannot legally do this if you can prove you have been here more than two years. However, if a judge wrote an order or removal for you (meaning the US is legally allowed to deport you), or there is another kind of warrant for your arrest, documentation will not help.
-
If you have an I-94 form which shows a departure date in the future, make sure you carry a copy of it in your wallet. If the departure date on the I-94 has passed, it is NOT evidence that shows you have the right to be in the US.
-
If you have an un-expired employment authorization card, make sure you have a copy of it in your wallet.
-
If you are detained by ICE, consider contacting your country's consulate. Click here for a list of consulates. If you have applied for asylum, be aware that contacting your consulate could impact your asylum case, consult with an immigration lawyer before doing so if possible. The Mexican Consulate has an App, ConsulApp Contigo, that Mexican citizens can download.
HOUSEHOLDS WITH CHILDREN

-
If you have US citizen children, make sure they have passports and that you appoint a legal custodian for them in case you are not able take care of them. Click here find out how to get a passport for your child.
-
If you have school aged children, make sure you let their school know who has your permission to pick them up if you are not there.
-
If you have children in day care or with a babysitter, make sure you give them a list of people who can pick up the children if you are not there.
-
Make sure your children know where you keep your emergency plan.
-
Make sure your children have a list of emergency contacts, along with the contacts' names, in their school backpacks.
HOW CAN I FIND SOMEONE TAKEN BY ICE
ICE has an "ICE Locator" website which tells you where the person is. Click here to locate a detainee who is currently in ICE custody or who has been in U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s custody for more than 48 hours. Please know that it can sometimes take longer than 48 hours for the person to show up in their system. You must have the correct spelling of the person detained by ICE as well as their date of birth, to find out where they are being held.
