PUBLIC CHARGE UPDATE - WHAT ADVOCATES NEED TO KNOW
On September 9, 2022, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) published a final rule on the public charge inadmissibility ground. The new rule will become effective on December 23, 2022. PAYING BOND
At the end of April, 2023, ICE announced the launch of CeBONDS. This is a new system people can use to pay bonds and secure the release of immigrants held in immigration detention. The new system allows people paying the bond—"obligors" —to go through most of the process online, without having to make the payment at a local ICE office.
U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, law firms, and non-profit organizations can use CeBONDS to post a delivery bond, voluntary departure bond, or order of supervision bond. Noncitizens can also post a voluntary departure bond or order of supervision bond on their own behalf.
To post a bond online, click here. Effective June 1, 2023, bonds must be paid electronically utilizing the CeBONDS system.
